The
Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and Shelby McIntyre’s UnBanned. Propaganda?

Another
film festival, the Gay and Lesbian film festival, or whatever it is called
(I’m not sure because I pay little attention to it), is, in my opinion,
a crass propaganda film festival which has no relevance to independent
film, as well, and no relevance to what the heterosexual mainstream wants
to see (well, I could make some points here where it could be relevant
to independent film, but I have no desire to. I really don’t care,
and I do not wish to make points which would strengthen their hand and
their agenda). I mean, come on; when all your films are about are gay
people defining themselves by their sexuality, which I think is very shallow
and superficial (which would make it anti-art), as well as self-serving
(pun intended), are the films worth seeing? Why play it safe by preaching
to the choir when you should be reaching out and exposing people to new
things without beating them over the head with it? You don’t see
straight people defining themselves by their sexual orientation and flaunting
it, do you? What would you call a film festival which only shows films
about heterosexuals defining who they are by their sexual orientation?
A pervert film festival?
There is a double-standard, too. If I were to make a heterosexual film
festival, I could imagine the hate mail that I get as people called me
a bigot. Doesn’t that potential criticism go both ways?
Not interested, and they can keep their cause to themselves, thank you
very much. Most people are deeper than that.
Shelby McIntyre, who is a talented, good independent filmmaker, and someone
whom I consider to be a friend, is someone whom I consider to be the King
of documentary films in Tampa Bay. Regarding documentaries, I tried to
convince Shelby to make a documentary about independent filmmaking in
Tampa Bay, exploring the controversy and the players, but it looks like
I will be the one making that film (which will make me super-duper popular,
I am sure. Hey, maybe it will inspire them to make up more lies about
me and spread it around! How professional! In my opinion, the latest casualty
of the lies which have already been going around would be Andrew Allan,
who, in my opinion, doesn’t seem to be able to think for himself
and believes everything that is told to him, like douchebag followers
usually do. I never had a problem with the guy, and thought well of him,
but now...... I have no respect for him because now I think that he is
an idiot, and while they may think that it doesn’t matter what I
think, it does, and it does much more than what they think. I will be
a part of the future of independent film in Tampa Bay, and those others
will be a part of the past. Oh, and Andrew Allan, I WILL be directing
independent films with a camera around my neck, because, unlike some filmmakers,
I actually know what I am doing and comprehend the importance of still
photography on a film set. Also, just so no one goes around making up
more lies about me, anytime anyone has a question about what I am photographing,
they are more than welcome to look at the raw image files on my camera,
because I have nothing to hide, unlike certain people). Shelby would not
make a documentary about independent film in Tampa Bay (He might, now,
after reading this, I suspect, and that is fine as long as it shows more
than one side of the story), and it is my opinion that he is too buddy-buddy
with some people. I will be making a lot of films about what I know best,
which would be independent film, photography, and modeling in Tampa Bay,
as well as about the industries and the business in general.
At any rate, Shelby McIntyre made a short independent film, UnBanned,
which is about gay activists and Rhonda Storms, a combination of topics
which actually sounds both weird and funny if you really think about it.
I saw this film at one of Guzzo’s Tampa Film Review monthly film
festivals (TFR 10, November 10, 2006, to be exact. I was sitting there
in the audience next to Chris Woods, and at one point, I turned to Woods
and asked “Who is Shelby?”. This, of course, was before I
knew of Shelby or had met him). While I consider it to be well-made, technically,
I think that it was extremely biased, and almost an attack on Storms (and
I am not, at all, defending Rhonda Storms, as I do not like her, and I
have issues with what she does). That film, in my opinion, was presented
as a documentary, but was actually a propaganda piece, and I was one of
the ones who complained to Nolan Canova, who reviewed the film on his
Crazed Fanboy/ Pop Culture Review (PCR) web site. I told him that I thought
that it was a propaganda film which did not make its case because it only
showed one side of the story, and did not allow the audience to arrive
at their own conclusion and make up their own minds (which is the mark,
and the point, of any good documentary). It is my opinion, also, that
Shelby tried to cash in on controversial subject matter in order to draw
attention to the film, instead of actually creating a proper documentary,
for the sake of the controversy itself (It does not take talent or skill
to sell something on a superficial premise or to sell it at the lowest
common denominator; ANYONE can do that! Don’t do something controversial
just to be controversial! Right? It’s my opinion that Chris Woods
and John Miller are doing just that with the sick faux snuff films that
they are making, and it is also my opinion that these two are expressing
their fantasies in those so-called independent films). This short film
reminds me of the nature of the films shown at the gay and lesbian film
festivals (and, please, I’m not trying to offend Shelby or to attack
him. I respect and like Shelby, really. It’s just that this is how
I feel about that film, and it’s how it made me feel. I felt as
if he was trying to hit me over the head with the subject material instead
of delivering an objective, balanced film exploring all of the angles,
which may have actually been effective in inspiring some respect and support
from me in regards to the subject being covered as well as allowing me
to explore the subject material thoroughly so that I could make up my
own damn mind.) Now, I have nothing against gays, and believe that they
should have equal rights without being discriminated against, as well
as be able to marry. I’m simply not a fan, though, of their definition
of pride or the way that they go overboard with it. I think that what
a lot of gays do, especially the militant ones, is obnoxious, disrespectful
to the rights of others, and horribly tacky. Simply put, though, I’ll
respect them as long as they respect my rights as a heterosexual, a heterosexual,
ironically, who is much deeper and understanding than they come off because
I am much more than my sexual orientation, and do not define myself as
an individual by my sexual orientation; If I defined myself by my sexual
orientation, I’d be very shallow and superficial, and I’d
be labeled a pervert, and rightfully so (and don’t even go into
the horrible lies that some filmmakers have been spreading about me. I
did not do anything wrong, other than try to help out these people, and
anyone who knows me knows that I am a good man who has integrity and does
good work. Is that how you want to win? Pathetic..... I thought that you
guys were better at debating and doing whatever that it is that you claim
to do. I criticize by making valid points and qualifying my opinions.
These fools can’t debate, so they make up lies and try to destroy
my credibility with them, and the worst thing is that this happened after
I went out of my way to help them! No wonder there is no independent film
community in Tampa Bay with these unethical, unprofessional morons trying
to sabotage others. Now you know why I do not respect some of these people,
and if they keep it up, I will start to sue them. Additionally, when others
find out that these people make up lies about others, then it backfires
and the credibility of the liar is gone! I have done nothing wrong, and
did not start anything. As for my “trolling”, and me being
a “hater”, well, it is nonsense. I merely started voicing
my opinions, stating the obvious, and put them in their place.
I stood up for myself and the rights of others, and there is nothing wrong
with that. If anyone out there wants to believe a bunch of lies about
me, then I know that they are a follower who does not think for themselves,
and I don’t ever want to work with them or help them; I do not deal
with idiots. That said, I do not hate anyone, but I will certainly make
these bastards accountable for their B.S. and lies, and I will not be
bullied into going away or stopping just because some people decide that
they don’t like me for being different, or whatever, and they try
to discriminate against me in a dishonest, unethical, unprofessional manner
by making up a bunch of lies about me and spreading them around). I simply
find most gays to be extremely annoying, and it is my belief that what
they are/ do is a choice, or is a result of their experiences. Is homosexuality
natural? Well, we have two genders for a reason, and if it were natural,
we would only have one gender, which would make the issue of homosexuality
moot. Truly, if they were “born that way”, it is my opinion
that such a condition and orientation would be natural selection at work,
much like the body automatically aborts a fetus when there is something
wrong with it, as homosexuality does not make it easy to reproduce and
pass on the questionable or damaged genetic code which may have triggered
the “condition” to begin with. At any rate, despite what the
militant gays aggressively promote, gay rights are NOT the same as the
civil rights movement, as sexual orientation is not the same thing, or
as, literally, “black and white”, as race is. I have a right
to my opinions, and just because I am not a fan of gays and what they
do does not make me a bigot, nor is it any kind of hate crime. I am also
not “homophobic”, as I am not at all afraid of these people,
which I believe is some insult aimed at people who think for themselves.
I think for myself.
Anyway, regarding the film, as it was, I was annoyed and alienated, and
I’m sure that I was not the only one to feel that way, as there
were other complaints. I certainly hope that Shelby’s Joe Redner
Strip Club King documentary, which I will be reviewing here on Tampa Bay
Film, but which I have not yet seen, was not made that way. If it shares
the format, the review will be damning, and will be a tragedy, especially
since I consider Shelby to be the king of documentaries in local independent
film.
Well, at least until I get into the game of making documentaries. I will
also make sure that there is more than one side portrayed and allow the
audience to make up their own minds about the subject material, and inspire
debate, as that is what makes a good documentary. I will also be making
a documentary about the players in Tampa Bay independent film and the
history; everything will be known, and everyone will be accountable for
what they have said and done. There are some people out there
who have damned themselves.
